Basketball
This winter, the Varsity basketball team has had a season full of hard-work, determination, and unparalleled fun. They currently hold a fourth place position in their A-conference standings. Senior Forward, Emma McGonnical says, “Even with the setback of not having a season last year, we have been able to bring back the pride of Roland Park Basketball and will continue to show up and compete with our tough competitors in the conference.” Exemplifying the team’s exciting potential, Freshman Kelis Fisher scored a record-breaking forty-one points to win a crucial game against Archbishop Spalding. All in all, RPCS’s future in basketball looks remarkably bright.
Swimming
This year the Roland Park Swimming Team has had a great season in and out of the pool. Despite 6am practices and the constant smell of chlorine, they had a successful season-ending of three wins and two losses. Yet their record is not the only positive thing. Lily Milstone, a senior member, recounts the season saying, “As a team, we have a really strong bond, and we always cheer each other on and are there for each other. We have had a really hard season, and we have stuck together and pushed each other to be our best with every meet.” The phenomenal team dynamic led to the Reds winning by forty-one points in their Senior Day match against the Key School and finishing third in the B Conference Championships.
Squash
The Varsity Squash team had a fantastic year ending the winter with a record of 8-5 and a continued love of this phenomenal sport. Through the highs and lows, the team played with unparalleled spirit and grit unlike anything seen in the history of RPCS athletics. Anna McGurkin, captain of the team, says, “our fitness… astounding, our serves and returns… amazing, yet the thing I am most proud of is the team dynamic fostered within those four breathtaking squash courts in the alley by Petit Louis.” Yet our squash team is far from done. At the end of February, they travel to Philadelphia to compete in the 2022 US Squash National Championships. While competing in Division Three, the team remains determined and hopeful to make their final impact for the season.
Winter Track
Despite the hindrance of the omicron variant and the consequent cancellation of meets, which infringed upon the typical Indoor Track season, the Reds excelled this winter. A highlight was the IAAM Championship: RPCS earned medals in shot put, the 800m, and the 4x800m. The Reds wrapped up the season in February with a strong performance at the Georgetown prep invitational: Senior Annie Obrecht set a new school record, and the 4x800m team proved themselves (yet again) a beacon of athletic excellence placing 2nd!
The Indoor Track team continued to put in the work throughout the season, which is best exemplified by the plethora of personal bests achieved this winter. Senior Sydney Liang and jumping captain said, “Despite all the bumps in the road that covid continues to bring, we made the best of it. We had a great turnout with talent across the board and I’m excited to see what comes next in outdoor track and the coming years.”
