Badminton
The RPCS Badminton team had an impressive showing this spring. They had a 3-3 record, with wins against Garrison Forest, Notre Dame Prep, and Friends. Their hard work clearly paid off as they finished in 4th place in the IAAM Championship tournament, hosted at RPCS. A highlight from the competition was when senior Kendall Keehneer, who played Badminton for the first time this year, won the IAAM A Conference individual championship; Kendall and fellow senior Coco Cameron received All Conference honors. When reflecting on the season Coco, who was also a captain said, “The badminton season was so much fun! It was great to have our first full season back ending in a normal championship!! Our team did super well and took down some great competition…A special thanks to Coach Himelfarb and Coach Wong for a great season and we couldn’t have done it without your help!” With both a series of successful games and plenty of fun, the Badminton team had a great season, and we are excited to see what they do next year!
Crew
The crew team has been enjoying this season as they have been able to begin rowing on the water again. While the occasional stormy skies and windy afternoons deterred the team from taking practice to the Inner Harbor for a few practices, they have fully taken advantage of every opportunity to row downtown. Their first regatta went well, with multiple eight-seat boats and four-seat boats racing and the varsity eight-seat boat coming in second place during their race. The novice rowers have performed exceptionally well, exemplified by freshman Norah White’s impressive achievement of breaking two 10-year-old school records for 100 and 250-meter rowing machine pieces. The team looks forward to their upcoming regattas, especially the multi-day final regatta at Princeton. Senior co-caption Ellen Salovaara says, “Thanks to our hard-working and close-knit team, our dedicated coaches, and our return to rowing on the water, this season will be very memorable and has lots of potential.”
Golf
This spring, the RPCS Varsity Golf team has had a season of great spirit and growth. With 2 wins against Bryn Mawr and Mount De Sales, along with a win against Bryn Mawr and Garrison Forest in a dual scrimmage, the golf team continues to approach matches with high spirits. They "worked together as a team to overcome any doubts," says Reena Jari, a sophomore on the team. As a team, they “made many improvements, created new friendships, and overall had a fun season.” The team ended the season strong, placing third at the IAAM Golf Championships. Freshman Ashby McGill placed 3rd overall with IAAM All-Conference honors as well. Congratulations, Varsity Golf; keep up the hard work and optimism!
Lacrosse
This year the Varsity Lacrosse Team has given it their all! They played hard through the toughest of games and refused to give up even against the highly competitive A Conference teams. With a record of 3-10, the Reds finished as the eleventh seed, only one position away from making it to the playoffs. Yet even with this somewhat anticlimactic ending, the camaraderie and team spirit are unparalleled. Junior captain Natalie O'Neill says, “It has been such a fun year and I think we have gotten better each game. I love our team so much and we are like a family. We had the best seniors ever and I’m gonna miss them all so much next year.” Under the leadership of the new Coach Drost and countless talented players returning next year, the Reds Lacrosse team has a bright future!
Softball
The Roland Park Softball Team has been on fire this year! With a record of 6-2 and a close-knit group, the 2022 softball team is one for the books. Senior Captain Maddie Current says, “After a great season last year finishing 3rd in the IAAM, the softball team has had another great season so far. We have a bunch of talented underclassmen and everyone is so ready to learn and get better, or try a new position if the team needs them. We’ve played three games in overtime and fought hard through every inning. We have amazing spirit and great chemistry making every game and practice encouraging and fun.” Congratulations to the softball team and their great season; there is a bright future ahead!
Track & Field
This winter, the Varsity Track & Field team has had a season full of hard work, determination, and well-deserved results. They currently hold a strong position in their A-conference standings, and throughout multiple hard-fought meets, many athletes had lots of PRs and ran qualifying times for championships. In addition, a few athletes have even broken school records this season. Senior Sydney Liang recently broke the high jump school record at the height of 5”1. Junior Hannah Roth set the new school record for the 2000 steeplechase. Reflecting on the trials and tribulations of this season, Senior Captain Sydney Liang says, “Outdoor track had a great season this year with talent across the board. Stepping up to the challenge each time, we were faced with fierce competition at both league meets and invitationals. We’ve enjoyed the transition back to normalcy and are excited to see what comes next in the following years.”
As the spring season wraps up, the Reds prepare for championships with focus and determination. IAMM championships will be held on May 11 at McDonough School and May 14 at Archbishop Spalding High School.
